Enzo Maresca questions officials after Hincapie avoids red: ‘Why judge differently?’
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has questioned the consistency of Premier League referees after Piero Hincapie escaped a red card for an elbow on Trevoh Chalobah during Chelsea’s 1–1 draw with Arsenal. With Chalobah left injured and Caicedo sent off earlier for a similar offence, Maresca believes officials are judging the same actions differently.

Chelsea and Arsenal played out a tense 1–1 draw at Stamford Bridge, but it was the refereeing decisions that dominated headlines rather than the goals. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca openly criticised the match officials, insisting that Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie should have been sent off for an elbow on Trevoh Chalobah.
What happened during the match
The match shifted early on when Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was shown a straight red card after a dangerous challenge on Arsenal’s Mikel Merino. VAR reviewed the tackle and agreed it was reckless enough to warrant a sending off.
Despite going down to ten men, Chelsea pushed forward and took the lead when Trevoh Chalobah scored from a corner. The goal energised the home crowd, but moments later the controversy unfolded.
While contesting an aerial ball, Piero Hincapie raised his arm and struck Chalobah in the face. The Chelsea defender went down immediately and was left with a visible black eye. The incident went to VAR, but the officials decided it was only worthy of a yellow card. This decision angered Chelsea players and fans, who believed the foul met the conditions for serious foul play.
Arsenal later equalised through Mikel Merino, and the match ended 1–1.
Maresca’s reaction
Speaking after the match, Maresca did not hide his frustration. He admitted that Caicedo’s red card was fair, describing the tackle as dangerous. However, he insisted that the same standard should have applied to Hincapie.
Maresca said he asked the referee why Hincapie was not given a red card, only to be told it “was not an elbow,” a response that did not sit well with him or his coaching staff. With Chalobah suffering a black eye from the impact, he questioned how such contact could be interpreted any other way.
He also compared the incident to previous matches this season, including a game against Tottenham Hotspur, where he felt his players were punished harshly for similar fouls.
Why the decision matters
For Chelsea, the decision had a big impact on the match. Playing with ten men created additional pressure, and the lack of a red card for Arsenal meant both sides were not treated equally in similar situations.
For the wider league, Maresca’s comments highlight a growing concern among managers and fans about inconsistency in officiating. Many believe similar fouls are given different punishments depending on the referee or the teams involved. The debate has intensified this season, with several controversial decisions affecting key matches.
A season filled with refereeing debates
The Premier League has faced repeated discussions about VAR and officiating. Clubs want clearer rules and more consistent enforcement. Some tackles are given straight red cards, while others that look nearly identical result in yellow cards or no cards at all.
Chelsea, in particular, have been affected by multiple red card decisions this season. This makes every refereeing call even more important, as it affects squad depth, suspensions and overall performance.
The Football Association may review the incident, especially now that Chelsea have voiced their concerns. However, without a post-match VAR intervention process for missed red cards, Hincapie is unlikely to face further punishment.
For now, Maresca’s comments will add pressure on referees and VAR officials to improve their consistency. Chelsea will move on to their next fixture, but the question remains: Why do referees judge the same incidents differently?
